Jinshan District celebrated the 35th Teacher's Day with a grand gathering and awards for outstanding teachers on Tuesday.

Awards for national, municipal and district levels were handed out to outstanding teachers and books were given to representatives.

Gao Xin, 85, donated 300,000 yuan (US$42,857.14) to No. 2 High School affiliated to Shanghai Normal University after selling the only house she owned to sponsor students from families with financial difficulties.

"As a teacher, I hope the donation can benefit more students," Gao said.

She donated 150,000 yuan for students in Dujiangyan of Sichuan Province in southwest China, near Wenchuan, which was hit by a devastating earthquake in 2008. In 2014, she donated 100,000 to the Jinshan District Education Development Foundation, which was all her savings at the time.

When Gao walked into the auditorium, the audience's applause lasted for a long time.

On Monday, Zhao Weixing, Party secretary of Jinshan District, visited nurseries, kindergartens and schools in Zhujing Town to greet teachers there.
